Finally found a Tri-Tip so I set up for indirect on the Weber Kettle

Tri-Tip pre-seasoned

Got the smoker up to 225*

Nice TBS

Set out to hit 135* F IT Medium

Meat hit 136* and climbed to 138* while resting not bad

Nice and juicy

Served with Sweet Tater and Asparagus

Reason I will never do another one of these! I could only taste the Vinegar

Meat was super tender

Thanks for looking

Richie

Still hunting for an unseasoned Tri-Tip

It sure looks good from here Richie!

You never see tri tip here in Florida either.

But I found that our local grocery store (Publix) will order them for you.

They come in a case, but you can pick which ones you want & not buy the whole case.

Although the whole case is only 5 or 6 of them.

I usually take the 3 best looking ones & leave the rest.

There is always 1 or 2 that are real small & I don't take them.

Had to give you a point for trying so hard!

Richie, I thought you wrote that it was pre-seasoned. That's probably the problem. The folks who do these have probably never eaten a tri tip, much less smoked one. Try to find one that is naked in the Cryovac and do your own prep. It's gotta be better. Good luck, Joe.

Yelp just like buying pre-sauced ribs, or pre-sauced anything.

Once you get that first unseasoned Tri tip and hit it with SPOG you'll be golden! A bit of Henderson's relish or Worchestshire is all one needs!

Too bad, good luck finding one the only issue will be you'll want more! Don't forget they love to spin as well!

It looks good, Richie but I know what you mean about those commercial marinades. They can be overpowering.

John I think I would have enjoyed the Pickle smoked better then that meat.

That looked really good. I never buy preseasoned meat, they never taste good. Here in California every grocery store has them and they start at about $2.49/lb. They did get up to $7.99/lb about a year ago. I didn't eat tri tip for a few months. My brother lives in Florida and tells me he misses tri tip. Hope you find some soon.

If you got any left or that type of Tri-Tip is the only option...FAJITA's !!!!...I marinate Flank steak and Skirt in Red Wine Vinegar as the bulk of a well seasoned marinade over night. You taste it but with the toppings works very well...JJ

I too live in California and tri-tip are as common as ground beef. Lots of places, including some great specialty stores, sell pre-marinated and/or pre-seasoned tri-tip. My experience is that even when I purchase from places that have the best meats, or from places that also sell smoked products, the pre-marinated products are absolutely awful and even the pre-seasoned are not great.

The reasons?

Simple:

1. They sit in the spices too long.

2. No one has rubs that are as good as what you can make yourself.

Since applying a rub takes only a minute, and even marinating is quick, there really isn't much reason to purchase anything other than the bare meat.

However, since you can only get the marinated version of tri-tip, perhaps you should look at this page which provides alternative names for the same cut:

12 Other Names for Tri Tip

Perhaps you really have it, but it is packaged under a different name. If you do manage to find some, I recommend either Jeff's original rub or Jeff's Texas rub. The recipes for both can be purchased directly from Jeff.
