I just purchased a Masterbuilt 40 propane smoker and am doing my first smoke today. At the lowest setting the temp is hitting 270+, which searching this forum seems to be a common problem.

I found some information here indicating if I purchase the Bayou Classic M5HPR-30 regulator hose assembly, this should solve my problem.

The threads I was finding on this seems to be at least a few years old. I was hoping someone could verify this would still be a good solution?

Also would anyone know if I should be able to make this mod with the regulator "out of the box" on the Masterbuilt Sportsman Elite 40, or might I need other fittings to make it work?

Thanks.

Yes the Bayou Classic should work fine, no extra fittings to buy.

You may get a little better adjustments with a true needle valve, but it will require a few extra fittings.

If you go this route make sure to get some propane approved teflon tape for all the connections.

You can tell it's for gas because it's yellow.

Thanks Al.

I didn't realize that this wouldn't be a true needle valve. If I went that route (thinking that sounds like it might work better and be a little lower in "modification cost."), is that something that can typically be found at a Home Depot / Lowes?

Curious if anyone on here might know what extra fittings I might need to get to make that work?

I have two of them like Case uses, and one like this. In my opinion the brass valve is more precise for things like sausage where you need to raise the temp in 10 degree increments. If you just want to be able to control the temp better at lower temps, then the one Case uses is the easiest to install. This is the setup on my Smoke Vault 24. HD or Lowe's has the valve & fittings.

Hope this helps!
