Upper Bucks, PA Newbie

Hello All

Am new to this great American past-time, altho I have to admit, I am somewhat overwhelmed...


A little bit about myself... am semi-retired and live about 20 minutes south of the Lehigh Valley PA in Upper Bucks County. I spend quite a bit of time in Paul Smith's in the Adirondacks (where I went to school for cooking some 40+ years ago). Needless to say I enjoy the outdoors & cooking,  I also enjoy photography & being a musician. 


Altho I didn't pursue a culinary career, in recent years I have rekindled (pun intended) my interest in cooking and in particular grilling. 


After watching an episode of a BBQ series I was hooked. Years ago I travelled to North Carolina, Florida and Tennessee and really enjoyed the various BBQ's. I am excited to be able to create this myself.


So.... here I go. Altho I have a Weber Kettle I decided to get a pellet smoker grill, it should be here tomorrow.


Getting back to the overwhelming aspect, what meat would you suggest I start with?


Lastly, am interested in going to BBQ cooking competitions/festivals and would appreciate any info on any in the Northeast.

Hey, JC welcome to you. glad you decided to hang out with us here.

Congratulations on the nice new smoker, may you have many happy smokes with it.

I would suggest some chickens for your first smoke, mainly because it's cheap.

Kinda get you used to your smoker and how it works and acts.

The one rule you should never forget is, have fun with it.

Also pictures are good things.
