I have a masterbuilt 44 in 2 door smoker.

on my first cook i got very little smoke using wood chips.

I have made the mod of swapping out the chip box with a cast iron skillet before the first cook.

Any help would be appreciated.

I do not have a propane smoker, I use a 40" Masterbuilt Electric Smoker (MES).  Most of the complaints about insufficient smoke have been resolved by using wood pellet supplementary smoking tool made by Amaz-N (see link below).  If you search the forums you will see you (and I) are not alone.

I have the 12-inch tube smoker and it makes smoke for about 3 to 4 hours.  I like this product so much I just ordered the 5x8 pellet smoker yesterday.

ALSO - first go-around with my tube smoker I bought Traeger pecan pellets - a 20 pound bag.  It tasted "off" to me so I switched to the pellets sold by Amaz-N as they are 100% made of the wood that you order, not made with a mixture of oak, alder, and oils and maybe 30% of the wood it says it is.

Good luck.

I have a similar smoker and I find that chips are not the best way to get smoke because they burn up too quickly.  I suggest you use chunks that can be found at most hardware stores.  The bigger the better because they will smolder longer.  When the smoke stops all together just toss in another one.  I also recommend not soaking them but that's personal preference.  I definitely agree if you are looking for smoke without having to tend to the smoker much, an AMPS tube is your best bet, otherwise the chunks will work out just fine.

I have the smaller 1 door version that i have been using for 4 years now and i started with chips but now i only use chunks of wood unless i use the mailbox mod that i made which works good also       my favorite wood is the Jack Daniels chunks made from the old barrels
