AMNPS Placement

I mentioned my issues with this when posting about a smoke I did but haven't yet had feedback so I figured I would put my question in the right spot!  I have an MES 30 Bluetooth and am unsure where the best place to put my a-maze-n smoker is.  I have done a lot of reading and I am not sure mine is configured to allow for the suggestions I have seen.  First I have read about bars to the left of the heating coils, I don't think they are there?  Second I have read about on the floor to the left of the heating coils, this will only fit if I take the bottom pan out and when I tried that I noticed the pellets closest to the heating coil starting to smolder prematurely.  I am now wondering if the 30 was smaller than I wanted but it is too late!  With that said I would hate to sacrifice the bottom shelf to the smoker with the limited room I have already. I was thinking about trying in the drip pan? Thanks for looking and for any feedback!  I have attached a photo below.

Looks like with what you mentioned about the Mes 30" BT you have, the best place is putting the AMNPS on the bottom shelf to the left side away from the heating element. Also, making a tent from an aluminum pan to keep drips off the pellets, eliminating grease fires. Or the mailbox mod. I did the mailbox because I want open combustibles in the AMNPS outside the smoker away from grease fires or proximity fires to the heating element especially with the Mes 30".

Thanks Kurt!  Would you put foil on the bottom since I would need to remove the tray?  I guess that placement would prevent me from using the 3rd row of the AMNPS but I could be filling the chip loader constantly! I will look into the mailbox mod based on your feedback.

I have used my Mes gen 1 40" without the bottom drip pan and lined with foil, making sure to punch a hole in the foil for the grease to drain and extra air for the AMNPS. I never applied smoke longer than nine hours so I've only used two rows of the AMNPS. If it won't stay lit on the bottom then try the fourth rack and if not there then mailbox mod.

Thanks for all the info Kurt!

Based on your suggestion I think I will end up building a mailbox, I want to cold smoke so that seems to help there even.  My girlfriend is out of town this weekend so I'll also have time to fiddle!  I'll let you know how it goes.  Thanks again.

I think that's the safest bet. I made a thread called Nascar mailbox mod because I used a car Jack for a temporary stand till I got the permanent one made in the pic below. In cooler months I found connecting the mailbox to the side condensed the creosote just fine for hot smoking. I have a two foot extention for the summer if I want to try it.

I don't cold smoke in the Mes because I want more circulation so I cold smoke in my grill, using the aluminum flex pipe in the pic below.

I plugged all the holes in the bottom of the mailbox with magnets except the two closest to the door. I've found that to be fine without making holes.

That's a great setup!  I have only used it a couple times but I don't seem to have any airflow issues yet, will definitely keep the grill strategy in mind for the cold smoke.  Hoping to have it up and running Saturday.  Thanks for all the ideas!

I think you'll get cleaner smoke in the MES (less creosote) by using some flex pipe from the mailbox to the MES like you do with your cold smoking setup.  This will allow the smoke to cool a bit before entering the MES, which supposedly reduces creosote.

I was planning to use flex pipe because I didn't want it to stick out as far as his example but that's another great reason!  Thanks for the input.
