Hi all, I'm from CT and I will accept your scorn as I tell you I use a Masterbuilt electric smoker. I know I know. My dad always cooked on charcoal so I have nothing against it and have grilled on charcoal many times. But at least to start I like the ease and consistency of electric.

Welcome to the forum.

By the way. Many great cooks here have MES smokers. Nothing wrong with using one.

Check out Bearcarver. A awesome cook that has step by step cooks all on a MES.

Truth be told. I have been using mine for a couple years now. It's been working great until about a month ago when the temp started going screwy. Won't shut off. Seems like it's not that uncommon a problem and and external controller might fix it. That would be a cheaper option than buying a whole new unit.

Make sure your temp probe on the back is clean.

Like mentioned above, the first thing I would do is clean the little heat sensor real good. It looks like a little toggle switch, and is located on the interior back wall of the MES. If that gets all black & covered it could effect it's accuracy.

If that doesn't help, you could see if you can get a new MES control to replace your old one, or like you said maybe an external controller would be another option.

Once you get it squared away, here is a whole bunch of things that are really easy to do with an MES:

Cleaning didn't help[emoji]128533[/emoji].
Then I would call Masterbuilt & tell them everything it does wrong.

It sounds to me like it's the controller, so maybe since it's a couple years old they'll sell you a new controller---Cheap.

Have your model number ready---It's on the plate on the back of the smoker.

I turned the unit off and went to go have dinner. I came out after to put the unit away and found that the unit hadn't in fact turned off. It was reading over 300 degrees! It wasn't until I unplugged it that it finally shut off. I'm thinking it's not fixable.

Yup---Must be the controller.

I've seen them come on as soon as they are plugged in, instead of waiting to be turned on & timer set--->> Also Controller.

Ordered a controller. Found out it's on back order. They don't know WHEN it's going to be in stock. Oh goody.
