I just found this forum and the thread with lots of smoker builds. I noticed most all are quite big. It's just me and the wife now (kids have moved out). and I would like to build a smoker but I also would like it smaller and easy to move around or load up for camping if I want. Why are most so large? the most I could see myself doing is maybe 2 racks or ribs. I have a 100 pound propane tank I am considering cutting down so that it is about 32 inches long and add the fire box on the side, that will give me about a 30x13.5 inches of cooking space. Is there a problem with this plan. I would like to make it a reverse flow water smoker. (still looking at designs for that). any input or good information links would be appreciated.

I don't see any problem with it. Why build & maintain a big fire if your only smoking 1 rack of ribs for you & your wife.

I'm in the same boat, so I have all 3 sizes of WSM. Sometimes the little one is all we need.
