New Char- Griller side box

Just got a new Char-Griller sidebox unit. This is my entry to charcoal sidebox smoking. Is there anything I should know before I start putting it together?

Get all of the joints sealed as well as you can. Enjoy

Depending on how they build them now?  And it has been so long that I don't know?

 

There is probably a football shaped piece that has to be punched out of the main pit body to allow heat and smoke from the firebox to enter the pit.

 

Be careful when punching that out. Support it however you have to and punch carefully.  You do not want to bend the area on the pit where the firebox joins it.

Thank you Venture.That is the sort of info I need! Like when I stood the MB gasser on it's head to install the legs the door fell off. I didn't realize it was just held on with gravity. The door was ok but my toe hurt for a while. I haven't dug into the box too deeply yet, but it looks like the opening is already there.

I have a question for anyone who already has one of these grills. I currently own (and have for about four years now) the half propane half charcoal version of these but without the firebox because I had a Master Forge gas smoker. The gasser has just about had it after seven years of use, the bottom is almost ready to fall out due to the thin metal and rusted surface so I am going to have to get a new smoker. If I add the firebox to the char griller it's a cheap solution and takes up little space in my yard. But I am concerned how this will affect the performance of the grill side. I really like grilling on the charcoal side of the grill, I really only use the propane side to clean the grates real quick and start the coals. But if I add the firebox, will it affect the airflow negatively for normal charcoal grilling? Does anyone on here have any experience with this? How do you manage?

I really don't see how having a smoker box hanging on one end will affect standard grilling...

Agreed...It shouldn't and probably won't.

I don't see how it won't affect it. Right now the air intake is on that football shaped area I need to punch out to add the smoker box so I am concerned how that could affect the overall airflow when I use it to grill steaks or burgers rather than smoking a Brisket or a pork shoulder. Does anyone have first hand knowledge of this?

All you're doing is moving the intake from that football shape to the end of the fire box. As long as the firebox isn't really leaky, no difference....
