Hello everyone!  I've been prowling the forums for a few weeks now and finally decided to join.  I have one of the cheapest smokers you can buy, a Masterbuilt 30" analog electric.  I have been fighting with it for months.  I couldn't get smoke from it unless I was cooking hotter than I wanted to, and even then I was getting dense white bitter smoke.  Luckily I found this forum and learned about the AMNPS and the mailbox mod.  Now my smoker works like I wanted it to and I am really enjoying it!

I am in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, a 39 year old male, married with 1 daughter, and my main hobby is brewing beer.  Brewing beer and smoking meat work really well together.  Making a batch of beer takes around 6 hours, and the family is much happier with me spending all that time brewing when I make them dinner at the same time!

Here is a picture of my smoker after the mailbox mod and adding ventilation.  I am a complete newbie to smoking so if you ever see something wrong with what I'm doing please tell me as I have very little experience and this forum is where most of my knowledge has come from.

Welcome to the forum!  Glad you found us.  I don't know about electrics but if it's smoking the way you want it to, I'd say you did a great job!

Mike

Thanks Mike!  I see you are a brewer too, cheers!

Welcome to SMF!

Nice job on the mods to your smoker!

Brewing beer really sounds interesting to me, mostly because I like to drink good beer.

Just what I need, another hobby!

Indeed!  Just like any hobby you can go simple or go head over heels down the rabbit hole!  The two hobbies go very well together since they take about the same amount of time and are both usually done outside.  It is definitely an interesting hobby, and they can even cross over if you like smoked beers.  I'm really enjoying the smoked porter I made by smoking 8# of pale ale malt.

Thanks for that! I just signed up for the newsletter and I will go over all that reading tonight to wind down for bed.

Don't worry about the "cheap smoker"! I have a cheap MB gasser myself and use a mailbox for sausage & cheese. Doing the " mods" is part of the fun!

:welcome1:

I'm a drinker not a brewer!

I've been having a Mr. Beer kit in the closet for a few years now. I may have to bust it out!

Mike
I'm sorry to say that the ingredients won't be very good anymore, but the plastic parts like the mini keg will still be good.  Malt extract doesn't age very gracefully, and even the dry yeast is past its prime at this point.  So many Mr Beer kits are given as presents, I'm guessing quite a lot never get used.

Good evening and welcome to the forum, from a sunny warm day here in East Texas, and the best site on the web. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about  everything.

Gary

Boy, you aren't kidding!  I have been reading the forum every night and what a great group of people!
