Making Chili

Do you think it would be necessary to pre BBQ some Trip Tip and Briskett if you are going to make a crock pot full of chili or can you just put it in raw.  I was thinking of cooking for 8 hours on low in the crock pot.

Depends on what flavor profile you're looking to get. If I'm looking for a little smoky flavor in my chili, I toss in a chipotle or two.

For chili I always smoke the meat first. It gives the chili a wonderful smokey flavor, that you won't find in most chili's.

Al, are you smoking ground beef? And if so how do you smoke it?

Yes, we smoke it all the time. The easiest way is to make patties or balls. If you don't have a jerky rack for your smoker it's alright to smoke them in a pan. The ground meat really picks up the smoke. If your putting it in chili, you don't need to cook it all the way, about1 1/2 to 2 hours of smoke at 225 is good then finish cooking in the chili.
