Hi Guys,

I live in northern Ontario where its probably around -13c or 10f or so today and I am breaking in my new Masterbuilt Sportsman Elite.  I had a cheaper smoke hollow that I needed to use a ratchet strap to keep it closed and with analog electric heat, I had to adjust the heat all day as well.  I love that this new smoker has a door latch and is digital.

I have 2 questions maybe you can help me out with.

1. I accidentally bought some wood pellets and have only ever used chips.  My new smoker says to only use chips.  Now that I have opened this 20lbs bag of pellets, is there any problem using pellets where smokers call for chips?

2. There is a link on this site for a 5day eCourse on smoking.  Anyone done it?  Any good?

I have only been smoking for a couple of years and still learning.

Welcome to SMF!

Why not take the 5 day course, it's free.

I have used pellets in my MES and I actually liked them better than chips.

Hi Al,

What is MES?  Masterbuilt electric smoker?

Do you use a smoker box, like this https://www.amazenproducts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=AMNPS5X8 , or do you put them right in your wood chip box?

I tried some pellets in my wood chip box, but only a few of them were smoldering after 3 hours at 275 and the rest of them were just black.

In the meantime I ordered the smoker box and look forward to using it.

Im doing some ribs today...  going to do the 3-2-1 method.  Cant wait until they are ready
