So here are the pictures that were requested earlier.  As you can see there is no cookie tray in the smoker.  I removed it before smoking this chicken.  This picture shows how much I had the smoker filled for this chicken.  At the very back of the first row it jumped to the second row before it turned.  It didn't do too bad, but it did jump a little early.

It all look good. In my 30 mes, the pellet tray is alot closer to the burner. So that's not it.

I don't see any rods at the bottom of your smoker. I set my tray on them rods for air flow.

Are they Todds pellets? Are you drying them in a oven or microwave, maybe getting them to dry?

The first pellets that I used (that also jumped) were Todd's pellets.  I am currently using Traeger Pellets.  The only process I have used for drying my pellets (so far) is to have them in the smoker as it is heating up.  I haven't had to nuke them or put them in the oven or anything.

Until now I didn't know you had a Gen #2 MES. That's why there are no support rods.

Maybe the water pan was trapping heat too close to your AMNPS.

The best thing to do with that smoker seems to be:

Remove the little water pan from the slanted Drip plate. (We don't need water in an MES water pan)

Set your AMNPS straddling the hole left by the removal of the water pan.

Set a throw-away foil pan on the floor under the water pan hole to catch drips.

Try that & get back to us.

When the cookie tray is in the smoker was the slanted drip tray with the little water pan in as well?  If so, Maybe two layers of solid metal low in the smoker is trapping heat forcing it to rise up the walls.  The bottom slant tray with the water pan butts up against the left and right sides, allowing convection only up the door and back wall.  Then a large flat cookie sheet above it keeps air flow up all walls.  Bear mentioned people removing the slanted tray and water pan and putting a disposable foil pan on the bottom rack,  allowing convection up all walls without trapping it on the left and right sides as well as making it more similar to the Gen 1 and 2.5.  Maybe 2-3 inches of space at the walls with a smaller foil pan on the bottom rack or second from the bottom rack won't trap as much heat which may be better for the heating element and electronics in the floor of the smoker.  I have the Gen 1 40 and moved my oval water pan up to the second from the bottom level (it can be placed on any four levels.)  It keeps air moving around before it hits the food rack, keeping temps more even across the food rack.  Or if it's jumping rows toward the heating element, maybe lighting the bend in your pic above and letting it burn away from the heating element towards the left wall.  The pic below is where I put my water pan.  The  cardboard is just a deflector I foil that doesn't apply to you since your top vent is on the left.  It also keeps drips off of the chip tray roof.

You should not have rows jumping with all the info you've provided.  Im stumped.  The only time I had that happen is when the smoker got too hot, or I overfilled.  You're doing neither.  Very weird.

I'm smoking a couple pork butts tonight.  I have a very small homemade aluminum pan under them to catch drippings.  I'll see if it jumps rows tonight.  Hopefully it will go well this time.

Good luck---And Let us know----We'll get you straightened out.

Yours is an unusual problem. Most Gen #2 problems with the AMNPS are keeping it going---Not Jumping Rows.

It seems like maybe I am getting some heat trapping from the water pan.  It did pretty well for my pork roast, but I could tell that it jumped again near the end of the first row.  As I look at it, it appears that where it is jumping is really close to where the water pan comes is (if that makes sense).  I will try to remove the water pan next to see if that changes anything.

Exactly what I said in post #24 above, however that's still a guess until you try what I said in that post.

That's the only way to find out.
