Thanks b-one!  It came out great, my GF was taking the med rare pieces by the end of dinner.  I really love the reverse sear for tri-tip.

Do it!  I cooked this on my kettle over indirect heat until the IT was 125, this took about 1.5 hrs.  Then seared over flaming coals for about 2 minutes per side.  Let it rest for 10-15 minutes,sliced and served.

not a real popular cut around here but  I have seen them once in a while

definitely going to have to try this one, looks delicious :)
Thanks for the compliment uncle lar!  A local grocer has them all the time.  They were pricing them at $11.99 per lb at their peak.  I've seen em go as low as $5.99, it is a tasty cut of beef!  This forum introduced me to it!
