Dyna Glo Smoker

I have a Dyna Glo smoker that I've used about 10 times over the last 2 years or so, its been my first experience with a smoker of any kind and I've had decent results.  I'm not ready to get it a little bit more stable so I don't have to watch the temps so closely, I have a couple questions I hope you all can help with.

 

First, I've seen a number of people sealing their doors with Nomex tape.  My main cooking chamber door is already tough to close, will it be impossible with the tape, do I just have to muscle it, or is there something else entirely that I should do?

 

Second, I want to seal the section between the main cooking chamber and the firebox but the metal has already warped a bit creating a fairly big gap.  What is the best method to tackle this?  Can I disconnect the firebox from the main chamber and use high temp silicone, or might it be too wide at this point?

"If it ain't broke don't fix it". People use tape and the like to seal leaks. If your door is tight and has no leaks then don't fix it.  As for the firebox gap, I used this on mine to take care of that issue...

Thanks!  Did you get the 1/4 or 1/8?  I assume you got the 1000deg as well?  Any tips on installation?

 

Being my first time around with any mod all advice is greatly appreciated!

I believe I used the 1/8" Don't try to stretch the gasket. Measure and cut. Apply the sealant/adhesive and then lay the gasket onto the adhesive. Let it air dry for 24 hours and then fire it up and get it as hot as you can and leave it like that for at least 2-3 hours. Should be all set after that. 1000 degree is more than enough.
