Whatever you do up top, put it way over to the left. You have to overcompensate to make up for the heat being on the bottom right.
If your vent is on the right, the heat will go up the right from the element to the vent.
If your vent is in the middle the heat will go up mostly on the right until it gets near the top, then it will go to the middle to the vent.
Actually I found it to work much better to just put the removable heat deflector in the bottom right of my Gen #1. With that I am able to guide the heat from the element on the right over to the center of the smoker, so the center of the heat flow begins in the middle of the smoker before it rises through the meat, instead of after it gets at or near the top of the smoker.
