Hello from pennsyl-tuckey

Greetings from the northeast.... My name is Joe, and I just found this forum. My current rigs are a four burner gas, for the hot and fast, and an old barrel grill that I simply set up for indirect cooking to do my smoking on. The barrel is rusting through and leaks like a sieve. We are talking barely functional as a smoker at all. But I will struggle through for the autumn and get a new rig in the spring.

That being said I can only justify about $300 budget to the wife (no matter how good the food is). Normally I cook for 4, but occasionally I go all out for several people. So doing some homework I've been mulling over the dyna glo vert offset or the wide body version. My concern with this unit is the size... I've seen all of the mods suggested they are no issue, but cutting the rib racks in half is not ideal for me. Is this unit tall enough to hang my ribs from the top? How about the thickness of the steel? Would I need to insulate? If so what can I use that would hold up to weather?

If anyone who has one of these can help me out that would be great.

I'm also open to suggestions of other rigs to buy

Thanks in advance

Hey Joe.  Welcome aboard.  I don't have any experience with the Dyna glo.  Hopefully some one with a history with them will post up.  Have you studied the UDS smokers made using a 55 gallon drum?  (Sounds a little like the "barrel grill" you mentioned)?

A lot of folks really like them and they can be put together for a fair amount less than the budget you mentioned.  If you could squirrel away an extra $100.00 i am confident in recommending a 22.5 inch Weber WSM.  I have the 18.5 inch model and like it a lot.

My barrel grill is sideways... I have considered both the wsm and an ugly barrel... Buying in the spring I might be able to swing the extra $100. Thanks for the info.. I appreciate it
