DS2003, I have never heard of such a rig ,what a clever idea to recycle a harrow into a cooking implement.

I had to source this disc out of the Willamette Valley. And yes by metal yards I mean places that let you get what you want and pay for it. Over where I live there's to many rocks so there aren't many harrows. Find a community that does lots of grass and hay and there has to be a metal scrap yards somewhere with them. Problem with ordering online is the shipping. This thing weighs at least 50 pounds. I looked at one on eBay and Amazon and the shipping was more than the disc to where I live!

Sounds like a lot of fun..and a challenge. Thanks for the info. I found the same thing with the shipping, that's why I'm tempted to get one of the pre fab I linked to, but alas...sudden money problems have been presented to life so I will have to sit on this for a while.

I have a burner like Thickstrings has though...similar at least, so that's an expense I wont have.

I live in an Agricultural/Farming area. I'll have to keep looking around...maybe pester a farmer out there on a tractor someday for some knowledge. That reminds me, I have the number for the Angus farmer behind my property...maybe a start...

Here's mine cooking up some beef and broc with ginger... Got it from agri supply. The disc and burner was 97$..The burner was to hot, so I set it on a blown out mower wheel..Its heavy, but sure not anywhere near 50 lbs. Its 22"...I love this thing!!
Was the disc ready to go or did it have the hub hole in the center that has to be plugged/welded?

They work great. Very popular in NE Mexico. You can cook all kinds of things in them. The heavy harrow discs work great because they hold heat well. The outer edges remain cooler so you can hold food while cooking in the middle.

AND...I'll guaran-dang-tee ya someone is pretending to play the steel drums while cooking on it somewhere!

It was ready to be used.  .It came with some kind of goo on it....I got rid of that and re-seasoned it with spray canola.. Then  cooked some bacon and sausage..
That looks like the Discada I linked from Amazon on page one, sold by ARC (Agri Supply) here's the page for all you folks that might want the shortcut. They have all kinds of cool stuff.

My guess is that discada is not quite as thick/or heavy as the Harrow Disc.

Thickstrings, how thick do you think that unit you have is?

Dirtsailor, how thick do you think the metal on your Harrow Disc is?

I'm looking for a proper steel wok, that discada might just be the trick, plus be a campfire cooking tool, but trying to get it to sit flat on a regular burner might be a challenge...but now that I think of it when I have seen Asian's cooking in woks when I've had the chance to peek in the kitchen, they are not using a typical range burner, it is usually different. Maybe there is a cone or ring I can use or as a metal fabricator just make for myself.

I have a 6 burner Viking cooktop in my garage for heavy cooking, and it's built in to a stainless curb with a full stainless cover that can be lifted and transported by two men in to a vehicle. It's LP ported so I could set it up out in an open field if I wanted! I also have a stand burner for turkey fryers and such, but it's a bit low because Turkey fryers and big steam pots are so tall.

The 22" that I have is 3.5mm and has a 3' concavity, according to the Agrisupply page.. Its carbon steel, and is easy to season. They also sell a 24"  that is 4mm and a little deeper.. I think a ring of some kind to set it in  is a good idea. Mine, as you can see is in that wheel, which is about 10' tall, that sits on a stand burner and all that is on a layer of brick. The disc ends up at 35".......................Did some one say deep fry? fry bread? tempura?           I really like this thing...........Really for 30$ its the price of  a ok dinner out...

Yep that's what I'm thinking. That's about 1/8"...not too shabby. I have a deep fryer, etc. but I can definitely see much possibilities with that Discada

I'm going to have to seriously consider getting one. I want something I can move around and actually use on a regular burner if possible, plus I blew out my right bicep so lifting is going to be a problem for some time. It cramped up on me just putting my cast iron griddle on my cooktop in the garage the other day...dagnabbit...
According to my friend who plugged the hole the disc is around 1/2" at the bottom.
Yep, that's serious business right there. I am a welder/fabricator by trade and know exactly what that means. No wonder it doubles as a tent warmer when you're done!

Nice Case, good score ! I really need to get me one of them bad boys ! Thumbs Up

You sure do! I've asked for a Discada sub forum, hope we get one, then let the postings fly!

Should be able to do that discada forum, that'd be kinda cool ! My Dad knows a bunch of farmers & my uncle is a good welder, I'm thinkin a bribe of a couple 12 pks & I just might have me a cooker !

For all of you looking for a disc to make one of these from, go talk to a farmer. We have to replace them all the time and every farm I know of has a pile of old discs in their back lot. My father and I are cleaning up my great uncles place and have thrown literally hundreds into the scrap iron pile. I'm sure most farmers would just give away the old ones (offer to let them come for a cookout once the wok is made). For the members looking to make tire rim fire pots, discs also make great lids for those.

Good tip! Unfortunately for me there aren't many farmers who use harrows in my neck of the woods. Mostly cattle and too many rocks! That's why I had to go over the hills into the valley to find one. The scrap yard where my friend picked this one up has hundreds of them. All different sizes and cheap. So they can be found!
