Where to start

So I am set up to smoke horizontal with a side fire box. I'm looking into a new thermometer for my grill as I've read not to trust the factory. I'd really like to know how to get a good charcoal base going for heat, where to put the chunks of wood for the best smoke, and how much of both do I need. Any advice would be great!

It sounds like you would be best served reading Jeff's book or taking his 5-day e-course. Both of those will cover all the basics to get you started. There is just too much to list in one forum post.
