I hear you about smokers.  Took me decades to get into smoking meat because my friends with smokers all had complaints about them.  Once I took the plunge though and understood that a smoker is just a smoky oven, I was off and running.  SMF is great for bringing new folks along quickly.  With all your backyard experience you'll have it perfected in no time.
