barbecuing on a budget

My name is Alan and I'm a wedding photographer from Greenville South Carolina. I've helped a few friends smoke brisket and a few odds and ends but I've always wanted to do my own. I don't have a smoker just yet I would love one but I live in an apartment and the grill they have would make you cry lol. So for now my oven will have to do. I love to dehydrate food anything from jerky to fruit leather. I'm hoping to do a brisket very soon and any tips about dehydrating or what I can do with my oven and a good cut of brisket would be great.

I too live in an apartment and don't have much of a budget. I've produced some pretty decent food on my mini WSM. Total cost is under $75, it's portable and easy to store. It's also a very capable and easy to use smoker. Do a search on here for mini WSM. You'll find quite a few threads on builds and equipment lists.

Welcome from here in Greenville. You will enjoy this site. There are lots of folks who can help with your situation. Use the search bar for specific needs. Have you considered using a crockpot until you can make a switch to a smoker? good luck and give it a try, Joe

Crockpots work great!!! It was crappy and rainy here for a few weeks, so I loaded up the crockpot with a 5lb porkloin wrapped in maple bacon, tossed in some onions, sprinkled some rub over it, poured in a cup of Motts apple juice and cooked it on low for 10 hours. drained the juice coated it with some homemade bbq sauce and enjoyed some of the best pulled pork sanwiches I ever had.
