Please help me identify this hardwood. Newbie here!

Hello all, I recently purchased an offset and plan to smoke a 6 pound whole chicken. I was going to buy some hardwood from HD but realized I had some old mixed wood laying around that I bought years ago from a guy off Craigslist for my fire place. I dont remember what type he said it was. Thanks in advance.

I can't tell from all those great pics..bark looks familiar but I can't put a finger on it (no hardwoods growing around here). I'd do a fresh scrape on the the wood and smell it. If that doesn't work, take some shavings and put in a suitable container, heat it to smoke-point or put a flame to it and get it smoking...smell the smoke...sometimes it works if you're keen on your smoke woods. As long as your sure the wood has not been contaminated during any cutting, handling or storage, it should be fine for smoking...but even if a male cat or dog marked their turf on it...well, that changes the rules of the game, if you know what I mean.

Don't know about the piece in your hand, but the one on the chair looks like either cherry or appleth_dunno-1[1].gif

That bark doesn't look familiar and you haven't added your location, so I can't take a regional guess, but there's a Woods for Smoking forum here where more people might take a look at it for you.

After a second look- the first might be maple, the last might be birch and I still think the one on the chair in the background is either cherry or apple.
