Jersey is okay I guess.

My fiance decided to buy me a GMG Jim Bowie as an early wedding gift. Now I need to learn to use it. Already cooked ribs and a london broil on it and even grilled a couple burgers. That thing turns out great food, especially for me not knowing what the heck I'm doing.

Looking to try a couple more things this weekend. Maybe a brisket or some pulled pork.

If anyone has any suggestions for a pulled pork recipe that one might find at a roadside BBQ pit in say Virginia along with a good home made BBQ sauce to go with it, I'd love to take a crack at it.

Welcome Mike,

Congrats on the GMG... I've had the Daniel Boone model for bout 2 yrs now & really enjoy it !

As far as suggestions when your starting out, I'd personally suggest a pulled pork smoke ! Pork butts are very forgiving, great for starting ! IMO, wait on the brisket til ya have a few smokes under your belt...

About rubs & sauce, ya can get rubs & sauces bout anywhere now days ! I've tried & made several... The owner of the site, Jeff has a great rub & Q sauce recipe that is sold through the site. It's a win, win as ya get a couple great recipes & also support this site ! That being said, I've ordered a few that were great also. I'd just suggest maybe getting one with a lower sugar content if doing pulled pork, butts can be in the smoke for quite a while & heavier sugar based rubs can burn easier !

Glad ya joined us ! Also if your interested, there's a pellet smokers group ! There's some good info there !

Welcome from SC, Mike. WHB gave you some great tips on rubs and sauce. Also, Jeff's book is a good reference for recipes, etc. There are lots of folks who will also offer their ideas. All you have to do is ask. Good luck with your cooks and be sure to send some pics. Joe

Thanks all. Smoked 2 butts and the results were great. I used a finishing sauce that I found here which was cider vinegar, Worcester and apple juice with pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Two things I would have done differently are taking the skin off so as to not block the smoke flavor and then use hickory pellets rather than the seemingly all purpose pellets that came with it
