Hi All Outside of the Weber lid, when buying a 55 gal drum, what kind of lid should I be looking for?

As I understand there are different types of removable/locking lids..I'm thinking I should looking for a lid with bung holes first?

Thanks Dan

I have that same lid as case. It seals pretty well actually and I probably got lucky in that regard. I have had it warp in certain weather conditions and I have a big flat rock i set on top when this happens. it goes right back to flat after a little while with the rock on top.

Hi All Should the lid have bung holes, for air flow? What about the Big Poppa Kit for a UDS? Last question is stainles steel bolts and nuts  necessary?

Thanks Dan

The lid doesn't need bung holes, but you do need an exhaust. If you have a drill you can make that. The bungs are convenient because you can cap them when not using.

You can do everything on a UDS without the Big Poppa Kit for less than the kit.

Stainless is not needed just don't use galvanized.

i agree with this statement i have everything i need in my cart at lowes.com including high temp paint and a bbq analog thermo and its still under the cost of the big poppa drum kit

Now I have to see if the drum will fit in the back seat of Corrola. So you guys think I'm better off going to Lowe's/Home Depot for the all the parts?

What about zinc bolts? Would 2 sheets of the expanded metal 12 x 24 be enough for the basket?

the circumfrence of a 15" dia circle is approx 47.125" so i would say yes on 2 sheets of 12"x24" BUT it would be better and easier if you could find 1 sheet that was 48" long instead of 2 that is 24".

A 55gallon drum as approxmately 34" tall and 23.5" in dia overall

Also stainless steel bots and such would be best but i think zinc plated should work (i plan on using ss)

Home depot or lowes should have everything you need....although my local lowes dosent carry the expanded metal.....i was told tractor suppily should carry this though.

expanded metal can be tricky to find at lowes and hd. I found mine in the door aisle and they were selling it to protect screen doors from dogs. The next time i needed it I found it in the sheetrock aisle. Go figure.

Hi All I've already located the expanded metal at Home Depot/Lowe's, both have 24 x 24 and 12 x 24.

Two sheets of 12 x 24 shoulod do the job.

Thanks Dan

Timber, i know what you mean by stores moving things around... Wally World is the worst for that

Dan, that should work just fine... good luck with your build

Hi All Stupid question. I have a charcoal basket that I made for my  COS, it is 12" sq and 6" high. What kinda of burn time will I get using this in a UDS? Figure temps 250-300.

I'm guessing the right thing to do for the UDS, is to use a 15" grate grill with expanded metal 12" high as the sides, what kinda of burn time am I looking at?.

Sorry bout ALL the questions. I'm the curious type..

Thanks Dan

PS I thinking for the UDS 2-3/4 vavles and 2- 3/4 pipes, with caps.

You only need one ball valve and 3 pipe nipples with caps to do the job. That basket will work but you will have to put some legs under it to get it up off the bottom of the drum 3 inches or so. You also want to attach an ash pan. This is mine.
