Hello everyone! I'm new to all this but I already love it. Louisville ky here. A buddy came over last and brought his smoker and now I want one. I just don't know what to go with. Gas? Electric? Charcoal? Pellet?

Welcome to SMF smokaholic502.  Glad you got the bug because it has infected us all around here.

Now, what to buy?  Every smoker has its issues because lets face it, smoke is involved!  But each type has a loyal following of users all willing to answer questions and give advice.  The only way to tell which type smoker is right for you is to do the research and find the best smoker you can buy that fits your budget and smoking/cooking preferences.  It took me decades to decide on a smoker because the people I knew that had them all had complaints about their equipment.  I get the distinct feeling you don't want to wait that long.  I wasn't looking for more problems to solve in new cooking equipment so in the end I went with a fuel source I was very familiar using; charcoal.  I've had a smoky, delicious blast ever since.

Take your time deciding (maybe not decades), and get the type smoker that fits your ease of use and food capacity needs.  Remember to have fun with the process.

Thank you! I'm excited to be apart of all this. I smoked for the first time yesterday on my buddy's smoker and had a blast. I'll be buying my own smoker Friday and can't wait to use it. I'll be sure to late everyone know how it turns out!

Welcome Aboard!

Choosing a smoker is tough.  Start with a fuel source and go from there.  I personally have both an electric and a stick burner.  I love them both and use them equally (many times at the same time).  The only thing I would do different is I would go with an Reverse Flow pit (which I will do when this one is ready for a new owner).

Good Luck and Smoke ON!
