Finally got started. Cut open the door and started cutting off all of the old brackets on the tank. It's a 28 gallon compressor tank and I will be using a 10 gallon portable air tank as my fire box. I'll end up with a 20-22"x17" cooking grate inside the cook chamber. Door is 14.25" x 20" I am hoping to have the door seals welded on and the hinges installed within the next week or so.

Got the door made up and mounted. Got lucky and found a 5.25" ID piece of pipe in the crap pile at work so I'll be connecting the firebox to the smoker with that. Should make connecting the two much easier.

 
Drilled the hole in the firebox tank and got the pipe in there (barely fits in the hole from a 6" hole saw) bout burnt up my drill doing it so I held off from doing the other hole in the cook chamber. I'll bring home one of our big low speed drills from work to drill the other hole this weekend. (Yes I know I set the tank on the wrong side of the cook chamber for the picture)


I'll cut the pipe shorter once I get it in the other tank. I want it to stick up a little as a grease dam
 
The Feldons calc. I'm a little big in the firebox opening but I'm within 5-7% of the numbers it gave me
 
Everything comes out right about where I had it before minus the exhaust stack. According to that formula I need either about a 45" 2" stack 28" 2.5" or a 20" 3" stack.

I already bought the stuff for the 2" so I will likely do a test run with that. Driving a larger hole and welding in a larger stack is easy. Going smaller is a pain in the ass.
 
25.87 square inches. I'll have to double check that pipe I used but I'm within a square inch or two of that (23.5-24.5 I can't recall the exact inside diameter but I remember I measured again and it was bigger than the 5.25" I posted above.)
 
Well I got the pipe welded into the bottom of the cook chamber. Then my son decided he was going to be a screamer (3months old) so that interrupted progress until after dinner.
 
Where the pipe enters the CC, cut it off flush with the CC.... air/smoke/heat has to take a 90 degree angle there and that will reduce the flow.... become a restriction...

Won't that cause an issue with grease dripping down into the firebox?
 
Do you have a drain in the RF plate.... maybe a small 1" lip on the end of the RF plate and a drain in the bottom of the CC... or put a "dam" about 2" away from the FB/CC inlet... Just thinking where the FB/CC inlet is located, the RF plate is above it... Not knowing how close the RF plate is to the top of the pipe, it could be a constricted area...
 
I'm not doing a reverse flow. At least not right off the bat. Just a standard offset smoker. If I build this one with any success I will likely build one larger that is a reverse flow. Just want to see how I like the whole stick burner experience. Very little money invested to make this one. Plus it's more of just an excuse to go play in the garage.
 
Got the basic frame welded up and the tanks sitting on it. Still need to cut the door in the firebox and mount the tank to the frame. I cut the door off because it wasn't mounted right so I will redo that.

 
The child decided to take another nap so I got the chimney mounted as well as welded the CC onto the frame.

 
Made the firebox door seals and added handles as well as the air intakes doing a test burn. Holds pretty steady at 275 wide open if I limit fuel. I know I can get it much hotter if I add more fuel as I had the CC over 550 when doing the burn off just from the firebox fire. Also temps are even within 5 degrees side to side.

 
Finally got some time to work on it. Got all of the welding done 100% now and cleaned up the welds/started removing the remaining powdercoating. Also built the cook grate and fire grate
