Couple Masterbuilt Electric smokers are on sale for father's day on Amazon and I've been thinking about getting one but wanted options first so I don't waste money. I know they get good marks on Amazon but I wanted to get opinions from the true pros:thumbup:. Obviously there is a price difference between them as well but I want to know if one is better than the other. Here they are. Thanks.

Hi, let me say you are doing the right thing getting advice on your purchase.
The first smoker is a Analog type, It comes with it's own issues and problems .That would not be a good choice. The second unit 2070910 is a solid starter smoker. It is priced fair and is considered  a Generation 1 smoker.. You only want to buy a Gen one smoker..
The gen 1 units have the controller on top not in the front and they are hinged on the right. The gen 2 and 2.5 are hinged on the left.
I have the 30"gen 1 and it is a bit small.  Good but small.
The best deal is a 2070311 stainless steel 40 inch with a window for 249.00 at academy sports.
http://www.academy.com/shop/store/weekly-ad. It is on page 19.   These gen 1 40" smokers are recognized as very good smokers. I guess it all in what you can afford.  I would buy the 2070311 S/S 40" smoker.  But as always it's just my opinion. Every one has one.  HAPPY FATHERS DAY.      Jted

Academy is doing a little bait and switch! The flyer is for the 40" which is a great price. Then you click on "buy now" and it's a 30". I'd be on it if out was the 40". Thanks though.

Yup---The one Dave linked-----If you can get that one, you'll be set for some outstanding smoking.

That's the one I have over 5 years, and I paid $349 for it 5 years ago!!!

I have this smoker      http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325&tag=smokingmeatforum-20&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB0034VXAY0%3Fie%3DUTF8%26tag%3Dbestreviewsadvisorcom-20%26linkCode%3Das2%26camp%3D1789%26creative%3D390957%26creativeASIN%3DB0034VXAY0 .

It is mostly a hot smoker & if you want to smoke at lower temps. ( 140 - 180 )  for fish ' sausage or jerky you will have to do a lot of mods. & will do much better with the other model.

I'm guessing with the digital it can get to those lower temps?

Yes! Just look at Bear's Step by Steps and see a world of possibilities!

Probably the only mod. I would suggest would be to get an Amazin smoke generator!

Don't forget, you can't trust the monitor on any of the MES smokers.  They're going to be off.  Invest in a good Maverick digital monitor from amazenproducts.com.

I've already got a maverick dual probe and I love it. Thanks!

Let me ask you guys this. Is it worth it to get a Bradley smoker instead of an MES?

I have the MES 30" 20070910 & really like it.

I don't know if they made changes since, but the last I heard was they were underpowered & their Smoking Pucks cost a small fortune.

This however is just from reading the complaints, but that was why I didn't get one 6 years ago, instead of my MES.

That's perfect. Thanks for the info. Are you the "bear" that does the mods mentioned above?

I don't have much in the way of Mods, because my MES 40 Gen #1 doesn't need much help.

All I have in mine is my AMNPS, my heat deflector, and my bug preventer on my top vent.

I do have a Step by Step Index that makes things easy for Newbies:

Just click on "Bear's Step by Steps".

Whats your budget?  I really like my MES 40 BT at $285.
