New to Smoking Meats

I am from Independence Missouri a suburb of Kansas City, I am new to smoking and I bought the Oklahoma Joe's Longhorn Smoker/grill.  So far I am enjoying it, been reading quite a bit about making Mods to the smoker does anyone have any advice to sealing off the smoker lid or the Firebox lid?  Good idea or bad idea?  Anyway  have smoked some pork chops and salmon, getting ready to start my first Butt roast, then I want to try ribs.
