So i have been smoking for around 4 years now and i want to start doing competitions to get my food critiqued by someone other than friends and fiancee.  Also, it looks like a blast so I am excited.  The problem is that i am currently and have been since almost day one (started on parents electric) using a propane smoker.  So I want to move to a wood smoker.  I want to try to get moving on a new wood smoker soon so i can practice on it all summer and start comps next spring.

My questions:

1. What is a good smoker for a starter in competitions?  I would love to get a Jambo, but it seems a bit excessive for a competition newbie.

2.  How many smokers do you guys usually take to a competition? I assume it wouldnt be beneficial to put all 4 meats in the same smoker as you would want different smoke and temp for different category.

3.  Why is propane illegal and pellets are legal?  Dont really care, but seems strange to me.
