Hi everybody new here and new to smoking, except for a few go abouts a on my webber kettle. However I decided I wanted to build my own real smoker, and do it on as much of a budget as possible.

So far I acquired a 55 gallon drum from a local auto repair shop (contained motor oil). Was planning on washing the inside and sand blasting. All I've done so far is cut open the side to get some perspective. As of now I'm taking my time figuring things out and acquiring materials. But I have a few questions.

Need some suggestions for the fire box? I debated on using a 30 gallon drum, or using a square fire box, built from scratch, I did read though a round chamber will move the smoke better?

Should I install a flue/damper between the fire box/cook chamber to control heat? Or just have it run strait through and control heat with damper on fire box?

Can I use the 2.25" hole in drum that was there from the manufacturer? Or is it to small? Does length of pipe play a important role.

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go along, but any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated
