They call me Papa

Hello & thanks for having such a great place to share and learn.
My name is Troy, I'm a temporarily retired 47 year young guy from Tennessee. I've been married to the woman I love , happily for 20 years.
I started smoking on my grill. Just a cheap 30 something $ job from Wally World. I've smoked butts & hams primarily and that isn't easy to do on a 18" square grill so yesterday I upgraded to a Oklahoma Joes Longhorn smoker. I seasoned it up last night , finished up around 12:30 am. I upgraded mainly because later today I have quite a few people coming over to observe Memorial Day. I say observe because we don't celebrate it. It's a bitter day for our family. We lost our youngest son , a decorated Marine 1 year ago on Memorial Day. Anyway , I plan to smoke some sausage, boudin , brats, chicken , stuffed onions & grill some burgers and dogs. You can see I really needed the room to pull this off. I'll be sure to post pics if I can figure out the right area to do so. Thanks again for the forum , I hop to learn a lot from y'all.

I need to make a correction to my original post. My smoker is the Highlander model not the Longhorn

Wow, really keeps in perspective what Memorial day is all about....

What a terrible loss for you and your family. I can honestly say I can't even begin to imagine what you all have been through. Thoughts and prayers for you guys go out from our family.

PapaJeep, I'm a 10 year Navy Vet. Lost a few friends while I was in. I can't even imagine what life would be like if I ever lost my son. My family doesn't celebrate memorial day either. We go to the local cemetery and put flags on all the graves of those who have passed on who served. Then we come home and have a meal and set an empty spot at the table for the fallen.

Thoughts and prayers for you and those who gave all.

Happier note, this is the best place to learn anything and everything about bbq, smoking, etc.... Glad you found it!!!

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Thomas I used to be a scout leader, we put flags out also. All the local troops got together at the veterans cemetery and put out around 33,000 flags. I spent a few rainy days putting those flags out. I never thought I'd be putting one on my sons grave. Thank you for your service & for remembering those who gave their all
