Todd and some others played with them a few years ago. You only need about a quarter of a cube, depending on size, to get the job done...JJ

A propane torch for me works great. I look at the clock when I start and spend a full 15 minutes before I put it in the smoker. I also always microwave the pellets or dust for a minute. Keep an eye on them as I have had dry ones start to smoke and almost catch fire in the microwave.

Happy smoken.

I have a big 16oz bottle of gelled fuel. looks like it should work, though I just normally use a propane torch. I basically just want to use it up. eh, maybe i'll just use it to easily start the fires in the firepit.

Lit mine again this weekend.  No issues at all.  Propane torch ($15) + Coleman propane tank that will last for a very long time ($3).  Zero complaints.

I don't know how ISO alcohol lights in the winter cold either. I know camping fuel has issues sometimes nice fishing it won't light until you can get it warmed up a little.
I know what you mean when you've been outside for awhile ice fishing and try to light a Zippo lighter.  Butane and propane only work well. I had hurricane lanterns with smokeless paraffin and it would gel in a few minutes.  If the fuels are room temp they should light fine in the cold if lit when still warm.  It's the darn cold and wind.

Update - I've been using AK1's idea with the hand sanitizer and I will never go back to the torch.  This is so freakin easy - it takes 5 seconds.  3 or 4 squirts on top of the pellets, touch it with a lighter or match and walk away for 5 or 10 minutes.  It gets a great cherry going.  I always had to hold the torch on them until they were going ok and sometimes had to relight them with the torch - never have those problems again.

I find my Wagner heat gun (not a hair blower) works better than a torch. It gets up to 1000 degrees. I hold it on till the pellets start to flame (sounds like a jet engine) and let the flame go while I load the smoker. It never takes over three minutes to be ready to go.

I need to try this.  Any type of sanitizer (Purell etc)?  Doesnt the wind blow it out?

I use a MAP gas torch.  I gently run the flame up and down each row of pellets to help make sure they are dry, then I concentrate on one end for a minute and then walk away for 5-10 minutes while the flame does it's thing.

This works for me...

OK - yes I know the blowtorch time was a long 10-15 seconds - more like 25 ... and the temperature overnight was in Deg C
