What do you guys thing of this firebox?  Expanded metal seems to be kind of pricey to begin with, and I don't have a welder.  It also comes with an ash catcher. Looks like it doesn't come with a tool for lifting the basket.  Is this just a waste of money?  It's 50 bucks plus shipping.

While expanded metal is pricey, it can be bent into that shape easily to the size you'd like and the bottom and handle can be strung on with wire (no welding needed!). As for the tool for lifting the basket, a welding glove is a useful tool as any.

It's up to you!

Thanks, next time i am at Home Depot I'll price it all out and see how easy it is to work with. This unit is 12x12x12. All this will be moot if I can't find a drum. It's been a hassle so far, but I am looking forward to the build.

Folks need to STOP buying metal at Home Depot/Lowes. I picked up a 4'x8' sheet of expanded metal for $80...

I have no need for that much. Home Depot wants 20 bucks for a 24"x24". There are a few places I can try to price it from around here. Home Depot is just easy. What is a fair price for a 12x48" piece?

If you're comfortable enough to check some local welding repair / fabrication shops, you could find what you need for under $10 (maybe even free), but like you said; HD is easier. That still seems like a better deal than $50+ and you get the satisfaction of making it yourself.

Expanded metal is real easy to work with, and 12x12x12 (if you want bigger or smaller) isn't your only option the homemade way. Maybe find a drum first then decide the size of your firebox.
