Newbie smoking first pork butt

Picked up a 8.5 Boston butt yesterday at the store for my new masterbuilt 2 door smoker. Tried some ribs a few weekends ago and had mixed results. I decided to try a Boston butt because I've read they are more forgiving. Salted it yesterday for the dry brining and left it in the fridge last night. Fired up the smoker at 5am and got it up to temp with the butt on at 5:30. Smoking with Apple chips. Rubbed it down with veg oil and using meatheads Memphis dust rub. Maverick et-732 is all set up and going. I can't imagine trying to do a smoke without this thermometer. So far my smoker has held a good temp 225-235. I know it has a long way to go. The butt is at 130 after 2.5 hours. Just finished my third round of chips. Now it's time to let it go and just check my temps every now and then. I'll post pics with a finished product. Hoping for a great result.

Sounds like a plan!  A stall is in your future.  If you look like you're going to run out of time before your commitment for dinner, crank the temp up to 275F.  A butt can handle it easily.

Thanks for the input. Its 3:00 now and I'm at 185. I may have to turn the temp up a few degrees to make it in time. I want to allow for a rest period before serving. I'll keep an eye on it and make a decision in an hour. Looking to get it out around 5-5:30 if it allows.

The butt hit 203 in 11.5 hours. Pulled it off at 5:00 wrapped it up in foil and put it in a cooler all wrapped in towelslet it sit for 45 minutes and pulled it out of the cooler. I was surprised when steam hit me when I opened the cooler. Didn't realize it would get that hit. Lol. Opened it up and grabbed and pulled the bone out. Came out clean as a whistle. 👍 grabbed the near claws and shredded. That was fun. Took a few samples and it was really good. Very tender and tasty. I'm very pleased. Friends are here now and it's time to serve.

Looks great! A clean bone is always a good sign. A Pork Butt is a good cut to start out with and it looks like you did very well. Now time to sauce it up and enjoy. The best part is enjoying the time and effort you put in!
