So I picked up this smoker, my first. Been reading about some mods to make it work the best. Got a couple specific questions. First on the tuning plate. How far below the cooking grates is ideal?  Does it matter more on the relation to the opening location to the firebox?  Does the damper between the fire box and the cooker need to be a separate piece and made adjustable?  I was thinking about taking a single piece of metal, putting a 45 bend then another 45 on the end by the box and have it mount flush against the side. Is the damper in place just to restrict the heat or does it serve another purpose? I was thinking the openings on the fire box and stack controlled the temp correct?  Sorry for the ramble, new to this.. ready to learn and prefer to make the mods once and get it right the first time. Thanks!
