As long as the red line is the top of the Fire Box... then you should insulate where the red line is and NOT above it... An insulated box, where you store wood, could, and probably will cause the wood the burn... I have had wood catch fire when stored UNDER the firebox.... wood smolders at somewhere around 500 deg. F...

Should have paid 0 attention to this. Top of my FB is insulated. Can place splits up there...and after 5 hours still handle them by hand. Same can be said for splits up against the back wall of the FB. As to the bottom of it...our youngest puppy crawls under the firebox...and falls asleep...so I doubt it is all that hot under it...
