Advice to a new guy

Greetings all..

Just got my Masterbuilt XL Propane Smoker for my birthday, and I need some advice on proper seasoning..

I tried it this evening, but the chips I used kept flaring up. I saw in a previous post that someone put Lava Rocks in the chip pan.. I have quickly deduced that chips are not the way to go.. That being said, I couldn't get the temp up to 400•, and am wondering if I need to do it again. (It was 40 degrees here in Pittsburgh when I stated out tonight, BTW)

Also, is it worth to get the sausage hangers, the extra rack set, and the side shelves?

Thanks in advance, guys
Rick in Pittsburgh

Welcome to SMF I can't help with the propane, but a sausage rack is easy and cheap to make.

Welcome to the site Rick.  I am not familiar with your smoker but did a quick search and found this.

Hope it helps you out.  Looks like plenty of reading to keep you busy for a while.  Good luck.
