New to smoking from Tucson, AZ

Thread Starter

Hey everyone! I stumbled onto this site while researching the grill I just inherited from my gf's dad and boy am I glad I did. Like the title says, I am brand new to smoking but am eager and ready to take it on. He gifted us an older Bar-B-Chef grill (not a smoker) but from looking at it and reading about smoking with a charcoal grill I think this will do just fine. The grill itself is in great condition, he owned it for probably 10 years and hardly (if ever) used it (sat covered the whole time out of the elements) so it's just going to require a little elbow grease to get it back into shape.

I like that it weights a metric ton, has thick rolled steel (not that flimsy crap you see now a days), has 4 separate cast iron grilling sections (which I will be cleaning and seasoning today) and the charcoal box has a knob that raises and lowers the box to control the temp. My only concern about maintaining temp for smoking is the lack of vents, but I figure I can fashion something to prop the door open slightly for ventilation.

Anyway I'm going to be attempting some pulled pork this Sunday and will try and post pics of the finished product.

Here is a pic of what the charcoal area looks like (this isn't mine but it's the same grill)

MrSurly,
Welcome, from southern Ohio, to the best forum on the internet if you are looking to learn how to BBQ/smoke/brine/cure/inject. Well you get the picture if you can do it to something you put on a plate to eat then someone here has probably done it then smoked it.

Use the search bar at the top of the page and you will be led to the answer to most every question you can think of. If you don't find the answer there then just post it and someone will chime in with their opinion on the subject.

Always remember the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask!!
Keep Smokin!!!

Naah  you cant get addicted,   I was buying my Carmex lip balm one day and the lady said " You know that stuff is addictive"  I said "   I don't think so"   I've been using this stuff for over 30 years " and I'm not addicted.   She just had a puzzled look on her face.
