So yesterday I stopped at the butcher on the way home from work, they had pork butts in the cryo. on sale for $1.99 a pound, so I picked up 18 lbs. That is for the smoker this evening.

Then my grandfather let me know the local C Town supermarket had pork butts, bone in, on sale for $0.59 a lb... .well who am I to pass up on that buy... so I picked up a few.

They are not as big as the others, each one was about 6 1/2 lbs each. But that's good, I can fit a lot on a smoker at once (i figure 4 at once).

I decided to smoke one up tonight, along with my other 2 from the buthcher. I'm also cooking one now in my crock pot, as I've always wanted to try out using one in the slow cooker. So I have one in there.

IF they taste good, I'll probably go back tomorrow and get as many more as my freezer can hold...

I picked up 8 today, and I have a mini freezer in my basement.. with about room for maybe 4-5 more.

The one in the slow cooker has my usual rub and some bud light in there for liquid and 2 tsp of liquid smoke... I'm sure it won't taste as good as pork butt on the smoker but heck if its half as good, thats still fine by me.

Ohh and so far the quality of the butt seems not bad. A bit more of that silver skin then the cryo vac ones and they had a harder outter fat cap that i trimmed down, but not bad so far. No funky smell either which is always a plus.

The crock pot one tastes good. It's up to temp already but it's not quite pullable... i snuck a taste, does actually taste good. I got a lot of rub on my fork but once i pull it/mix it that'll taste good.

Not sure if i should drop it to low or leave it on high, i dont want to COOK it past say 200 but i'm afraid leaving it on high might let it good... at the same time, id like to actually eat some of it sometime tonight. She's been on the slow cooker for about 1 hour on low then 3 hours on high

Okay something is off here... So there are three smoke butts on the smoker right... an 11 lb, 8 lb and a 7 lb.

The bigger two came from the butcher, cryovac, what i always use.

The 7 lb came from the local C Town, 59 cent a lb sale as I stated.

Somethings off though. It finished cooking a few hours ago and the other ones are only around 185.

I let it rest about 1 1/2 hours and just went to pull it.. it pulled but tough. Also, this isnt the bone I usually see... what is this? Anybody know what kinda pork butt has this bone in it? Was this the ACTUAL but?

Whats difference between regular pork butt/shoulder and the picnic one?

was that the bargain one you got? Looked different on top of the other two you got from the butcher some. Pulled looks good! I got itch to get me a butt now and do it... (was hesitant after doing 8 last time at once)

Yes thats the bargain, picnic i guess... I mean pork is pork... it was a bit tougher to pull then the others, probably because it cooked so fast. It's not too shabby. Def a bit less meat but at 59 cents a pound it's still a good buy I suppose. I only spent $30 on 8 pieces.

I didn't post pics of the picnic pulled. I'm going to bring it in to work tomm (both the smoked version and the crock pot version) and see how they like it.

I'm actually on a strict diet so I can't really eat any or much of the pork. But it's in the freezer... all 10 bags now, lol.
