Hey guys and gals,

Just posted to the roll call section but I wanted to drop pics of my project to keep you guys updated. Thanks to everyone here, I've already learned a ton from creeping through threads as a non-subscriber

. (that calculator excel file by gary s, is making me rest easier, I was sorta just shooting from the hip by looking at pics online).

So here's the basic low down. I bought a 3 foot section of 24" x 5/8th steel and spent the weekend stripping off the crazy thick coat of black paint on the exterior. I also spent an afternoon last week sanding out the surface rust that had formed on the inside of it. Also, I'm using a lot of steel that had been sitting outside for the frame, so there too I spent about 4 hours sanding rust off round and square tubing. Finally, I think I'm done prepping all of the materials and we can start that actual construction.

I have a very experienced welder and metal fabricator helping me with most of the work, so I'm looking forward to getting my welding and general metal working chops up to snuff during this project. I've basically been the designer/grinder thus far. Regardless, its been a TON of fun!

Here is the CC after the door was cut and the hinges welded on (the metal handle is only temporary so the door wouldn't fall in)

And here it is after few thousand tiger paws and quick strippers (and lots of elbow grease)

So that's what I got so far, minus the round and square tubing for the frame, but I didn't post a pic of those cause that's boring. Gonna get some 1" steel strap for the door gasket and a sheet of 1/4" plate for the reflector plate, the sides, and firebox later this week (should be the only additional steel I need to buy). Keep your fingers crossed that they will water jet the side plates out round for me, would save a ton of work.

Going skiing this weekend, but after that, I hope to work on this guy a lot. Any tips or advice for a novice smoker would be appreciated!!

Thanks for checking it out!

Gunna be a nice one, I'll be watching

Jerry,

Thanks a bunch. That was a long weekend of grunt work.

Gary s,

I've really liked many of your posts. I already toyed with the excel file you created as I said in my roll call post. Quick question though, the version I downloaded did not have a calculation for the opening between the reflector plate and the rest of the CC on the far side of the cooker. Is this standardized (assuming its not)? Maybe I am entering in the wrong key words to my search because I'm not finding much info, but I do need to hammer this out as that is the next step in this build.

P.S. I did use your file to calculate the opening between the FB and the CC. Great info there as my invented design would have been extremely inefficient. I had originally planned to use 2, 3" pipes, buffering out the FB by a few inches off the CC itself in order to minimize heat exchange, but I can see how that would stifle the airflow.

I know it was a lot of work.  Am doing the same drill now.  Just haven't had the time to post.  Hopefully in the next couple of days.

Regarding the opening at the end of the reflector plate, I understand it to be the same or larger than the FB to CC opening.  As I recall, the FB to CC opening was enhanced from the original Feldon's calculations  by 120%.  Believe the reflector plate to end of CC was enhanced over initial Feldon's calculations by 150%.

Am sure Dave or Gary will chime in.

Jerry

You need to enter numbers into a hand calculator.... It's not automatic....

Calculations for a standard design, reverse flow smoker..

Volume of the Cook Chamber.... Use the Inside Diameter of the tank...

... 23..... x ...23.... x 0.7854 x 60 .... = 24,929 cu. in. / 231 = 107 gal.
Diameter X Diameter X 0.7854 X Length = Volume in cubic inches / 231 = Volume in gallons

.....24,929 .... x ...0.004...... = 100 sq. in. opening...
Volume in cubic inches X 0.004 = FB/CC opening in square inches

Unfortunately, you needed to grow up in the 50's and know "old school" mathematics.... I'm not smart enough to make a calculator like Alien....(Feldon's)

Need help ?????? put some numbers up here.... Inside dimensions please...

We will walk through the steps of getting good numbers....

Sorry guys I was out of town. Thanks for the link Dave, Will be working on the build more tomorrow.

Dave, still a little confused as to how big the opening between the reflector plate and the far wall of the CC (for the smoke to travel into the CC proper) should be. Should it be the same square inch meansurements of the FB/CC opening roughly?

Volume in cubic inches X 0.004 = FB/CC opening in square inches

Volume in cubic inches X 0.004 = Area under the RF plate in square inches

Volume in cubic inches X 0.004 = Area required at the end of the RF plate in square inches

Volume in cubic inches X 0.33 = minimum volume of the Fire Box

Looking at the calculation..... they are exactly the same.....

Hey guys and gals,

Back in town this week and got a chance to put in some real work on the 'ol RF. I have named the project, Nightmare Smoker. Not because the build has been a nightmare (it's actually going quite well), but because I have a friend who calls his rock crawling jeep The Nightmare JK. I plan to paint the Nightmare Smoker in the same color scheme as his jeep. I'll post a pic of the Jeep so you guys can get the idea.

Yesterday we were able to get the bottom of the frame completed, casters installed and built the cradle for the CC. Very happy that all the metal prep is done and we are actually fabbing and welding! Next step is going to be cutting the reflector plate to size and finalizing the height of the cooker and cutting the struts.

Here's the frame laid out. and tacked.

caster mounts welded into place and casters installed.

View of the frame and CC lookin' all perty

And here's the cradle that the CC will sit in.

Well that's it for now! Thanks for all the help to everyone here. Your advice (and Dave's spreadsheet) have been invaluable.

Here's the color scheme I'm going for. So The door will probably be that green with the rest black. Might even do the lettering so I can tell him my smoker is cooler than his jeep
