I'm Steve, I live in Maryland, U.S.A. and have dabbled with home brewing and am now getting into smoking foods. I got my father and I a wsm 22 for this past Christmas. So far we've done ribs, abt's, and a prime rib. All have been Jeff's recipes and all have come out great. I'm looking to get a grill for myself and am torn between a wsm 18, a kettle, or genesis 330. I really like the charcoal and flavor it offers but that's a minimum of 4 beers. I may lean towards propane at the moment and use a smoker box when I'm not at my dad's.

Happy grilling

Good evening and welcome to the forum, from a beautiful and chilly day here in East Texas. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about  everything.

Welcome to the site Steve.  Good choice in the WSM.  I have an 18 inch WSM and it is plenty big for my GF and I.  They are said to be a good bit easier on charcoal, (Quantity burned during a smoke), over the 22".  It can be challenging cramming large pieces into the 18, but will hold a large quantity of smaller pieces, like butts.

I also own a Char Griller Akorn and if I had to choose between the Akorn and the 18 WSM, I would go with the Akorn.  It demands a little more constant attention to maintain temps but is a much more flexible unit over all.

I have never studied or wished for a gasser but I am sure that there are folks here who can advise you on those.
