Is there a need to baste or spray a Boston Butt in the smoker? And if so what suggestions do you guys have?? Thanks for the help

Mike

Need? No. Is it an option? Yes. If you want to, go right ahead. If you're one who values bark above all else then I wouldn't, as it'll soften it.

Need more info what type smoker do you have what temp you plan on cooking??

I have a small Charbroil 430 offset, and the past 3 BBs I have smoked I got up to 200 before I pulled them.
If you can get them to 200* F they will pull nicely, spritzing is a personal choice as is foiling.

I use a "dry brine" of Hymalayan salt for 12-24 hours prior to smoking...you can also use sea salt.

Trim excessive fat, rub the entire butt in the salt and let sit for 12-24 hours, apply your rub as you normally would, I try to get my dry run on 6-8 hours prior it going in the smoker at 250-275, and cook it to 195 IT and rest it out from there...

There is not really a need. There is some much fat in the butt that it will keep moist on its own. Also, with a large chunk of meat, spraying the outside will not really change the meat itself. All basting or spraying will do is change the texture of the surface. So if you prefer a soft outside instead of bark then spray away.

Everyone has there own methods for butts and they all work. It is simply a matter of picking what works for you.
