UDS Irish Pride

This is my first UDS Build. Let me know what you guys think. I'll start with the basket.

Then I found an old weber lid and had to do a little retro fit. I cut the outside edge off of the original lid and tack welded it to the inside of the weber lid and sealed with high temp silicon and put on a high temp gasket.

Before paint

After primer

Then I painted it green in the spots I wanted and put stickers on it. Then painted with a semi gloss black and pulled off the stickers. All high temp paint.

Hello.  Looks GREAT.  I only have one worry.  The basket and ash pan.  There doesn't look to be enough space between the basket and pan.  The coals MUST be able to get air from underneath.  No air flow and the coals go out.  NO heat.  I am not sure the coals will get enough air flow with that set up, especially when the pan fills with ash on a long cook.  I would have at least 3" from the bottom of the basket to the pan.  Just my opinions.  Keep Smokin!

That's a great point Danny I didn't think about the ash filling up the pan on a long smoke. I'll have to look into that. Shouldn't be to hard to modify.
Thanks

Nice looking UDS. I sure do like mine. I agree with Danny on the air flow. Give it a test burn and if needed you can easily extend the legs.

Happy smoken.

Very nice looking rig there. I too know for a fact you will have a lot of problems with that basket setup. By the time an hour goes by or less the ash will block air flow and the fire will die. My first incarnation was similar to yours and it did not work. I have 3 inches clearance from the pan to the bottom of the basket now and it works flawlessly. I can go 22 hours at least with a full load of charcoal now with no temperature problems.

I read that I should keep my cooking rack 24" from the bottom of my basket. How bad would it be if it was only 22"?

OH NO!  Just won't do!  Gonna have to cut it all apart and start again.  :icon_biggrin:  Serious now!  What's 2" among friends?  You should be fine with that Jon.  No problem.  I don't think you will experience any adverse effects.  Little small change on the fire basket/ash pan and you should be good to go.  Have fun.  Keep Smokin!

The Charcoal Basket should work fine now.

Great looking paint job by the way.

Planning my UDS build. Going to be, hopefully, building my basket today. Planning for 4" between the ash pan and bottom of the basket. Guessing that the intakes should be right at the bottom of the basket? Planning on four .750" intakes with ball valves...good?
Have a DigiGuru I use on the BGE, will be getting the necessary adapter so it can be used on the UDS as well..

I know that this is the bottom side of your basket but this is what my plan is for the top side of it..minus 5he welding of course. Going to extend the angle iron that will be used for the "frame" of the basket a couple inches above it so the diffuser, a Wallyworld pizza pan, has something to stand on

That should work fine inkjunkie. I used three .75" intakes with ball valves about 1" from the bottom.
