From New Mexico, moving to Germany

Been BBQ smoking for about one year now (2-3 times per week).

I started using coals and chunks, then moved to split logs and chunks. I use a generic side-box smoker, but since I'm moving to Europe I figured I'd try and purchase a Lang 36" before I go. Mostly smoke chicken, chuck roasts, pork ribs, beef short ribs, and sometimes brisket. I started out using Mesquite and since moved on to Oak, Pecan, Apple, Cherry, and Apricot.

If anyone has any idea how or where to buy split logs over in Germany, please let me know :) (second time moving to Europe).

Hello Thomas.  I am from Tx. now live in U.K..  I have ordered some things from Germany like smoked sausage and my FIRST ( in this country ) offset smoker because no such thing was available in England 15 yrs. ago.  I think because of the many U.S. bases they caught on to things faster than the Brits.  Bought a Brinkman and cost me £299 including shipping from Germany.  Smoking is actually bigger in Europe than the U.K. ( although it is finally growing here ).  You should be able to buy chips and chunks from a shop in Germany.  They smoke all sorts of things.  If not you can order from the U.K..  Logs you should be able to source locally so long as the language is not a barrier.  Oak, Birch, Alder, Cherry should all be available locally even from folks just trimming trees in their yard.   For things like pecan and mesquite you will have to find a wood supplier on-line who specialises in smoking woods.  I found my guy on EBay.  After your move consider joining the U.K. Group.  We may be able to help you with some things.  Good Luck.  Keep Smokin!

What part of the U.K. are you from? Spent quite a bit of time over there last time I lived in Europe (one of my girl friends was English-Dutch). Spent a ton of time over in Cardiff and Ireland as well. Probably stopping through Scotland before I get to Germany. I miss the the U.K., a lot.

The military base BX/PX will most likely carry chunks/chips, but I smoke with logs.. and chunks/chips are really expensive (compared to buying logs).

I sure will miss that Texas mesquite and post oak.

I'm in the process of ordering either a SQ36 or Lang 36 before I depart..

I am in the Midlands.  Not far from Nottingham.  Logs should be available locally.  So many homes have a fireplace.  Lump wood charcoal which is locally made charcoal from local hardwood is also available.  It adds a pretty good flavour without even adding additional smoke.  You should have several options when you settle in.  Keep Smokin!
