Stuffer Plastic Gear Replacement... Gears up ?? Gears down ?? HHMMMMMM

ok.. so I'm replacing the plastic gears in my Kitchener 5 lb Stuffer... $4 for the small one... $7.50 for the big one... so I got 2 sets...

looking at the picture notice the big gear (we'll say upright, teeth at the top)... my thinking is... when in this position, the very top of the gear that rubs against metal frame wears down over time. So when plunger starts pushing down on the meat, the threaded rod is pushing UP on that big gear, which in turn separates the teeth of the big gear up and away from the teeth on the little gear...

Since the big gear will fit in ether way (upright or upside down).. why not put the big gear in upside down so when pressure is applied it will push the big gear up and in turn push the teeth up into the teeth of the small gear ??

Does this make any sense and has anybody actually tried it ?? I'm gonna try it since they are cheap and I have a second set for backup if all goes bad....

PS. couldn't find a category for this so I put it under General Discussion ... do I need to put it somewhere else ??

I think you will find that it pushes the gear in to far under a load making it hard to turn..

Happy smoken.

David.. thanks for replying ... I too am thinking that as well... so i put a shim at the top of the big gear as to not push it up to much.... I had this same shim on top when the gear was turned around upright as in the picture ...

It shouldnt matter up or down as long as you shim so the gears dont drive into each other when down. I dont see the point. I would leave it as in the picture. you  would probably want it to slip or pop like it does when too much force is used
