Help! MES and/or Mav temp issue

At 154 for the MES, the Mav is reading 298

Opened the door....no way the temp inside was almost 300

Rasied the temp to 157, the Mav read 230

So...I took out my regular oven thermometer as a check

At 147 in the MES, the red oven thermometer read 162 and the Mav read 288!

Raised the MES temp to 177.  The red oven thermometer read 188 and the Mav read 295!

I was also occasionally getting hard "puffs" of smoke shooting through the top of the MES, almost just like an old locomotive steam engine.

Other odd thing is I checked the Mav in boiling water and checked at 210-212 degrees.

I'm at a total loss here.  At first I thought it was the MES going all wonky already but now after adding the other therm I'm still not sure even after checking the

Mav in boiling water.  Just went out and checked again after typing all of this and the red oven therm is still only 10 degrees from the MES temp while the Mav is

a good 60-70 degrees higher.

Swap probes, and see if the hi temp follows the probe

Probe may be bad on your Maverick

Do you have foil, foil pans, or a lot of meat all on one shelf, blocking air flow???

If not I'd go with the bad probe possibility.

I will swap probes and check, but when I checked the boiling water I used both probes and they read 210 + 212 degrees

Now, for some reason the Mav has moved down to 203.  No change in the MES temp was made.

So now after adding the meat probe to the Mav and sticking it in the MES (just doing jerky so not using meat probe), I get this reading:

The MES and the oven therm are both in the mid-170 range.  Seem like the BBQ probe is bad?

How old is your Maverick?

Try new batteries yet?

Try doing a boil test also , and make a note in your BBQ Log , what the temp .is and adjust from there. Try your different probes and see the difference .

That's what seems odd...did the boil test and used BOTH probes.  one mesured 210 the other 212.  when I put the BBQ probe in the MES it is way off, but the meat probe is

right on

Did you swap probes and then do a boil test , as Todd suggest :icon_question::confused: ,

I would box up the maverick, call whomever you bought it from and explain it is broken and you'd like to exchange it.

I am never happy when something I buy is broken, I don't want it fixed, I want a new one. You'll never be happy with refurbished.

It's odd. Put both probes it the oven last night @ 225 and they were pretty close.  This morning did it again and the BBQ probe was about 50 high.

Sent an email to Maverick about getting a replacement probe under warranty. Will try that first and if it doesn't work will have to look into returning.

One other thing----Make sure the probe is inserted into the Maverick receiver real good.

If it is, it sounds like you just got a bad probe.
