I haven't been able to find a suitable tamale pot for my mini build here locally. I did bring one back from when I visited LA this past summer. I think I found one here so I can make another...

So, I'm at a local store and I notice this pot and it looks about right so I grab it, it's on sale for &29.99, and I grab one small other thing that I actually went into the store to get. So while walking out I notice they have spam on sale for $1.57. I put the pot in my truck and head back in for spam. They have a limit of five so I grab two cases; as I headed to the register there's an employee heading my way with almost a couple of cases of spam and he tells me the limit is five cans not cases! DOH!!!

It's a 40 qt VM Industries tamale pot. It looks exactly like the imusa pot but just a bit bigger.

I also notice that the store is giving away free turkeys if you have a reward coupon. I think I have one in my car but not in my truck.

I buy the spam and out pops a reward coupon. I head straight back and grab a free 14 lb. turkey.

I then go home and pull out my mini to see if the pot will fit... The pot's a little big for the traditional build but I flip the pot cover over and it fits like a glove to the smokey joe. Then I place the smokey joe top on the pot and it fits perfect along the inside of the pot!!! It's exactly like a WSM set up...

The cooking grate is a little small but I have one inch SS nuts and bolts so they should be fine...

I hope to have this build done in the next few weeks...

Mini pot, free turkey and cheap spam equals a great day at the store!!! Yeah boy...

Had to come over here and look at your new pot. Can't wait to see it go together. Free turkey with a spam purchase is great. I look forward to seeing that qview.

Thanks guys!

My wife just told me this morning we are heading to the big city for the weekend (Hilo). My second daughters high school soccer team is participating in tourney and my youngest is doing a different tourney in Puna this weekend. My oldest daughter's team was in a tourney last weekend: NCAA women's college cup! Unfortunately they were matched up against #1 ranked UCLA and lost.

I hope to get some progress on the pot Thursday...

I finished the bolts for the top rack; used 1 1/4 inch bolts because with one inch bolts the grill will fall thru if it shifts all the way to one side.

I also riveted the lid to the pot and cut the hole out. I also put the lamp thing in for the probes to go thru.

I didn't paint yet and undecided on lower grate setup...

14 lb turkey fits nicely...

Very nice! Looks like the perfect size for that turkey. How well does the lid fit in that pot?

Everything fits perfect! The tamale lid is flipped over and the rim fits just over the outside of the smokey joe. The smokey joe lid fits just on the inside of the tamale pot. It's exactly the same set up as the WSM!!!

I vote for a big Oregon O in honor of Hawaii's best football player! Then send the pot over to me!

Max Unger? He's a Kona boy! ;)

I'm gonna look for a sticker today. It'll either be a big H kapa (haka?) design or a large a'ama crab! I'll see what I can find.

My daughter has a lot of friends that go to Oregon and she mentioned she was thinking of going there next year... The guy that I get my kiawe wood from his daughter goes there as well!

I spent four HIGHLY wonderful years at U of O!

Awesome job Welsh. . Love it. Why not break it in with one of those chickens you've got running all over the place?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've always heard those free range Hawaiian chickens were tough. Sorta like, put a rock in one pot and a chicken in another, and when the rock gets done and tender, the chicken will be ready. Lol
