Holey Kow... Is it warm here or what..... Haven't had one night of frost yet.... usually we have snow by now.... The shallots and Multiplier Onions are up..... Most of my garlic varieties are up... The garlic in the picture is the variety "Siberian".... It probably thinks it's summer.... (if garlic thinks)....

The plot that looks like "dirt", is a 6 X 40 area that I over seeded with winter rye for a cover crop where the corn will be going next summer..... One evening I saw about 50 quail strutting over the dirt... I swear they can smell seed that is 1/2" under the surface.... that plot had 2#'s of seed on it..... Do you have any idea how many seeds is in 2#'s.... probably about 36,000 seeds in 2#'s.....

Looking out there, there may be 2-300 germinated seeds... so, the quail got 99% of the Rye.... I'm gonna have to figure out something for next year...

....Siberian Garlic....

.....Shallots and Mult. Onions.....

....What was winter rye.....

I guess it is just cold enough here in the mountains, no garlic sprouts.

As for the birds, quail breast is very tasty. Just saying.

No quail here, but plenty of doves picking my rye. Used noise making whirligigs along with cording strung across rows. Cut down on loss. Smaller square foot plots I use birds netting about 3" off dirt and remove after growing. Hope that helps.

Dave it looks good. As said above Quail wrapped in bacon on the smoke. Make sure the smoker can be seen from the garden

And when did you plant your onions. Need to dry out here from  snow. Now is good. Black gumbo. She's mellowed out from fall plow. Tempted some times to just plant on top of furrows.

Shallots, onions and garlic are planted in October.... generally week 2.... then they grow all winter and really shoot up in spring...

I need to see if my garlic chives infestation is sprouting up yet.

The snow is about 3/5 melted off of my yard, lots of old snow piles along the streets though. Steady light-moderate rain, looks like it will go all day.

Wow. Totally diiferent . Plant onion sets and taters along  with peas, lettuce, radish, and such.  in mid March if not to wet.

They should be coming up pretty good by now.... snow melt to water them.... Time to test a few on a salad.... Dave

Try planting your root crops in the fall... My garlic grows all winter under the snow.... Temps down to 5 below it keeps growing....

Used to have many Quail around here. Slowly gone!. Best tasting bird there is.

They sure do taste good... PITA when they eat all your veggies that are sprouting... I swear they can smell a freshly, popped through the ground seed sprout from 100 feet... they sit on the hillside looking perplexed..... then head straight for the new veggies....

Be waiting for an update

Gary

Gonna gat a pic tomorrow...

The garlic looks real good... Gave it a bit of ammonium sulfate and watered... In the front of the pic is what is left of the shallots... I have 5 plants out of 50 or so... The fall growth in that warm spell did it in.... Oh well, I will have enough for seed for next fall planting....
I have somewhere around 400+ garlic plants... This year I will cull what I don't like.... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.... Garlic Dave doesn't like ... that's an oxymoron...

Thanks for looking....

looking good Dave... I still have the bag of garlic you sent me... its vacuum packed and in the freezer. Will use it in some sausage............

Planted in the fall?

Nice Dave, looking good. Mine is coming along we got over an inch of rain in about 3 hours, so it was under water for a while

You will need to plant in raised beds to keep it from rotting.....
