Absolute newbie from Calgary, Canada

Thread Starter

Hi all,

First, I'm a complete newbie.  I know nothing about anything related to smoking meat.

I just got a used MES Digital 30" smoker from a coworker (Great guy!!!  :yahoo:).

Its misbehaving and he knew I love to try to tinker with all things electronic/electrical.

Found this site and can't wait to get the smoker going and learn from everyone here!!

Doug.

Doug,
Welcome, from southern Ohio, to the best forum on the internet if you are looking to learn how to BBQ/smoke/brine/cure/inject. Well you get the picture if you can do it to to something you put on a plate to eat then someone here has probably done it. Use the search bar at the top of the page and you will be led to the answer to most every question you can think of. If you don't find the answer there then just post it and someone will chime in with their opinion on the subject.

Here is a link to the Electric Smoker section of the forum: http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/f/110/electric-smokers

There is also a group that is just MES Owners and I am sure you will find great info and help there.http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/groups/show/8/masterbuilt-electric-smoker-mes-owners

I have a MES 40 gen.1 What troubles are you having maybe I can help?

Always remember the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask!!
Keep Smokin!!!

Hey Wolf,

Thanks for the starter info!  :)

I just finished cleaning up the smoker and tested it out.  It works fine for about a minute or so, then when it gets to a certain temperature, it trips the breaker.

My breaker is 15A and the smoker uses 6.7A (nothing else running on the same circuit).

I'm guessing my heating element has a short somewhere that overloads the breaker.  Guess I should look into hunting down a replacement heating element?

Can't wait to break out the power tools!!!  :banana_smiley:

Hi David,

Thanks for the wisdom!  I'm already overwhelmed with all the wonderful meat posts!!

My first question was answered by searching "What is Q-View"?

I've been looking at how to make bacon...I LOOOOOOVE bacon!!!    There are so many options!!!  I can't wait!!!!

The first thing I would do is check the wiring conectors to the eliment. MES Is notorious for loose conection causing to many amps pulled thus tripping breaker. They are also known for using the thinest cheapest wire they can get by with.
Here is a link that may help:http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/117020/mes-40-wiring-problem
Always unplug it before you mess with it, or it could be a shocking experance
