Wes, Greetings from Santa Maria on the California Central Coast.  I live in what I call a climate controlled climate.  Room Temp. plus or minus 20 degrees year round, can't complain.

 

Enough bragging about the climate I call home, and on to the Brick Smokers. 

 

I am working on a plan for an outdoor kitchen to enjoy this nice weather, and I would like to incorporate a reverse flow smoker made of brick.  Not sure if that qualifies as a true BS, or even if it is a good idea, but would like to try and take advantage of the heat retention qualities of the brick as opposed to a steel tank.

 

I look forward to sharing ideas with you guys and pictures of builds.  I'm sure I will need a lot of help since I don't have any masonry experience, and I plan on building this smoker and a brick pizza oven in my project.  We will see.

Its a nice 30F this morning here.   Snow in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow.    I think we need to swap locations!  :-)

 

Good to have you aboard the best smoking site on the web. 

 

I have been ask a couple times about a reverse flow brick smoker.   It can be done, but I'm not sure I'm the one to figure it out.  It would have to involve brick and steal.   I'd love to hear ideas on a reverse flow BS.   Anyone here a structural engineer?   

 

I too would like a pizza oven.   I was hoping to get a footing in for it this fall, but it didn't happen.

Cool Wes, Thanks for the response.  I have weathered some northeast winters before, and I don't think I want to do it again, so I'll pass on swapping weather with ya.

 

I am a civil engineer with some pretty good resources on the structural end so that shouldn't be a problem.  Where I an lacking is the craftsmanship know how.  We will get it figured out I'm sure.  I will be getting going on my plans pretty quick, with a bunch of questions for both the reverse flow and BS guys. 

 

Hopefully we can be smoking by next summer.

I think the biggest challenge would be to use both masonry and steal in a way it won't crack the brickwork.   A smoker as a rule doesn't get hot enough for it to be a problem, but,  Close to the firebox it could be a factor.   

 

I love this idea,  hopefully between all of us we can put something together for you.
