Adam, get that pot cleaned up, give it a run in the oven on self clean, or burn it out with a weed burner. Then give it a scrub and dry. Get yourself some Flax seed oil. Apply a thin coat then into a 425 oven and bake it for a few hours. Let it cool. Repeat two more coats of oil and bake. You will have a bomb proof piece of cast iron. So slick eggs will slide right out. It's the only way to season cast iron.

That's it no more oiling or anything needed unless you run the thing through the dishwasher...

Seriously Case ? Cool.... We actually use flax seed oil, but didn't know about that with CI.... Good to know man, thanks ! Thumbs Up

My wife used it.

She won't do this again.
mine sits with bacon grease in it but when I first got it I rubbed it down with evo amd sprayed with some Pam then placed in oven at 400 for 30 minutes and haven't had any issue besides I have an electric stove and burners aren't big enough.

I own way to much Cast Iron. I have been around the block and used every method too season. Bacon grease, veggie oil, lard, store bought seasoning, etc... FLAX SEED oil is the only way to go. Flax seed oil polymerizes when heated. When done properly you get a slick hard surface that is almost indestructible.

Just a few results for Flax seed oil seasoning...

Here is how you can safely remove rust from your Cast Iron cookware..... then use the very high temp cleaning method.... A gas grill outdoors will prevent the home from getting "stinky".... and then, using several coats of flax seed oil, condition the pan... be sure the pan is "upside down" so the oil doesn't pool on the cooking surface...

I've never used the self clean oven technique to "unseason" a pan/pot. How bad is the smell? Is it something I can do then get rid of the smell while the bride is at work?

PS. She has a nose like a bloodhound.
You will want the house wide open if you do this,  it will make a stink!   I to have switched to flax seed oil and it seems to be the best way to go.  (it does kinda stink to me during the bake in/on process, sorta like fish)

The are more delicate when new.

My dutch oven is 80 years old.  With all that seasoning, even I can't mess it up?

Seriously?  I treat that thing like your first newborn baby!

Good luck and good smoking.

Crisco will work just fine as will any other oil.
Come visit and I will let you go harvest some bee's wax.
Happy smoken.

David.... You should try Flax Seed Oil.... you will be pleasantly surprised at the Super Hard coating it puts down.....
